BACKGROUND
Science fiction is my favourite genre and I've always wanted to write one of my own. The Hunger Games Trilogy, by Suzanne Collins and the Divergent Trilogy, by Veronica Roth are my favourite books under this category, and what I like the most about this genre, is that you can create your own world, based on what you think may occur in the future. Both The Hunger Games and Divergent tackle realistic issues - the fact that entertainment may begin to become a main element in everyone's lives or that citizens may be separated into factions to keep the peace among those in the dystopian city. I wanted to do something like that; so I built upon the idea of pollution, and Oblivia was born.
I knew that pollution was becoming a big issue for us now, and I thought how long would it be before we figured out a way to resolve the problems? Can we really stop what's happening around us? Or would we just have to... move? I'm not really a fan of stories involving aliens or when humans have to relocate to another planet, so I decided on keeping the setting still on Earth, but just in the sky in a city known as Arcadia (which means heaven).
The title Oblivia took a while for me to think of. I brainstormed a few ideas; Arcadia, City in the Sky, Oblivious, but none of them seemed original. I built upon the fact that the citizens in Arcadia, were "oblivious" to everything around them, and I thought of the title Oblivion. But after I googled the name - I found out that there's already a million other stories/films with the same name. Great. So I played around with the word and eventually came up with the title Oblivia, which not until book three (it's a trilogy) will actually have any reference to the story itself.
It's also a made up word with no meaning - which always helps haha :P
